Glossary
- Access slip road
- The lane by which a vehicle joins or leaves the motorway.
- Caravan
- A trailer fitted out for accommodation, towed by a light vehicle.
- Closed tolling
- A system where you pay by distance travelled, between entry and exit.
- Concession
- A contract by which the state entrusts a company with building and operating infrastructure.
- Electronic tolling
- Automatic toll payment without a long stop, via an electronic tag.
- Emergency call point
- A device or service to alert the emergency services from the motorway roadside.
- Fixed speed camera
- An automatic speed-checking device installed at the roadside.
- Hard shoulder
- A side lane reserved for emergency stops and rescue vehicles.
- Heavy goods vehicle
- A high-tonnage vehicle (GVWR over 3.5 t), subject to a higher pricing class.
- Interchange
- A structure allowing you to move from one road to another without a level crossing.
- Jawaz
- The name of Morocco's motorway electronic-tolling system, based on a tag and a prepaid account.
- Motorway axis
- A major motorway corridor linking two regions or major cities (e.g. A1, A2).
- Open tolling
- A system where you pay a flat amount when passing a gate, with no ticket.
- Passenger car
- A light vehicle for carrying people, generally class 2.
- Rest area
- A basic stopping area along the motorway (parking, sometimes restrooms).
- Section
- A stretch of motorway between two points, often a construction or pricing unit.
- Service area
- An equipped area offering fuel, food and restrooms.
- Signage
- The set of (blue-background, on motorways) signs guiding users: directions, exits, distances.
- Toll
- Amount paid to use a motorway, in return for the service provided.
- Toll gate
- Facility where the toll is paid, with manual and electronic-tolling lanes.
- Toll tag
- Electronic tag fixed to the windscreen, detected in electronic-tolling lanes.
- Trailer
- A towed vehicle that can change the pricing category of the combination.
- Vehicle category
- A classification (motorcycles, cars, trailers, heavy goods vehicles) setting the toll rate.
- Vignette
- A document or device attesting a right of use; broadly, also refers to certain tags.
